XRP: Experiential Robotics Platform

The SparkFun affordable robotics hardware platform levels the STEM playing field with digital content and community support

Image of SparkFun Electronics XRP (Experiential Robotics Platform)The SparkFun XRP robotics platform includes everything users need to start their adventure into autonomous robotics. The XRP platform can be assembled completely tool-free, which means there are no screws and there is no soldering required. There are many different programming options that can be used with the XRP platform: Blockly IDE, MicroPython, Visual Studio Code, and more. The learning curriculum that is included as digital content is set up so that a single student can gain knowledge of robotics at their own pace or as a group of students through collaboration and problem-solving in a team environment. The online modules included as digital content were developed as part of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) OpenSTEM initiative. Beginning with the fundamentals of programming the microcontroller to print out “Hello World”, the user will soon be driving a robot and will quickly move into incorporating line following, using distance sensors, and a servo-controlled robotic arm to ultimately build an autonomous delivery robot. These modules have been tested by hundreds of users and have been found to be fun and engaging. The content is developed for middle and high school students; however, anyone who has an interest in learning the principles of robotics will find this platform to be an excellent fit. Teachers and mentors will find that the XRP platform is aligned with next-generation science standards and is a perfect springboard for allowing students and new users to customize the platform in countless ways after completing the course.

The heart of the XRP platform is the XRP controller board, which is based on the Raspberry Pi Pico 2W along with a low-power accelerometer and six DoF gyroscope IMUs (LSM6DSOX from STMicroelectronics) a Qwiic connector for adding any of the Qwiic-compatible sensors or accessories, two dual-channel motor drivers for four motors total, four servo headers, a momentary switch, and more. The XRP platform kit also comes with an ultrasonic rangefinder, a custom line follower board, two motors with incorporated encoders, a servo motor, Qwiic cables, a 3D printed chassis and frame, two wheels, two casters, and a battery holder. The XRP robotics platform can be powered by any supply up to 11 V through the onboard barrel connector; however, it is normally powered by four AA batteries (not included in the kit). The online modules included as digital content were developed by WPI through its OpenSTEM platform.
