Pitfall #4: Most RS-232 devices do not have a way to disable or tri-state the driver output. These drivers must be disconnected when in RS-485 mode in order to allow the RS-485 transceiver to drive the bus. The 5kΩ impedance of the RS-232 receiver input will also load the RS-485 bus asymmetrically if not removed.
