The final detection method is referred to as Distance-Settable. This sensing method relies on the principle of triangulation, which means the angle at which the beam reflects off the object back to the receiving element changes based on the distance the object is from the sensor. This sensing method is sometimes called background suppression as it can ignore the background or anything past the set distance, which can be especially important if the background is unstable, however, detecting a shiny object may cause the output to chatter as its reflectance may not be reliable. Distance-Settable sensing method excels in applications where the object is darker than its background, most commonly a conveyor.
