Another option is to design with one of the platform manager devices or sometimes called “wrapper” devices. These are usually designed and developed by digital companies which means that they often do not have the features and functions which are important to analog and power designers. One essential consideration is that these devices only wrap around the control loop of an existing PWM, it is not possible to adjust the control loop, only margin and turn the PWM on and off. It also is not possible to “get to” or have control over critical power supply parameters such as slew rate control of power up and power down and under conditions of changing voltages between setpoints. The power system can still be no better than the PWM controllers that are selected. Platform manager devices often leave unanswered questions and tend to be expensive, plus the user might pay for features and functions that are not needed.
