Industrial standards usually work over the standard physical interfaces such as RS-485 and Ethernet. However, the higher layer implementations are customized to optimized latency and response time. For e.g., Ethernet communication with TCP/IP is non-deterministic and the reaction time is often above 100 ms. Remote I/O in industrial automation demands reaction in the 5-10 ms region. Motion Control mandates even higher demands determinism with cycle times into the microsecond region. As shown here, there are multiple popular fieldbus options for serial as well as Ethernet based standards. Integration of these protocols in industrial automation products requires ASIC or FPGA. Not just that, support of multiple standards requires modular devices that often need to be interchanged to support another communications protocols.
